New Research Upholds Practice of Water Fluoridation

Of interest is that a recent study conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Adelaide, Australia. It has produced the strongest evidence yet that fluoride in drinking water provides dental health benefits to adults, even those who had not received fluoridated drinking water as children.

The data compiled from nearly 3800 adults ages 15 and older revealed that adults who spent more than 75 percent of their lifetime living in fluoridated communities had up to 30 percent less tooth decay when compared to adults who had lived less than 25 percent of their lifetime in such communities.

Lead researcher Gary Slade commented on these findings

“It was once thought that fluoridated drinking water only benefited children who consumed it from birth. Now we show that fluoridated water reduces tooth decay in adults, even if they start drinking it after childhood. In public health terms, it means that more people benefit from water fluoridation than previously thought.”

Dr. Addleson will comprehensively answer your questions during a face-to-face consult, but meanwhile here are a few points to consider.

Evaluation: Meticulously studying the condition and location of underlying bone allows us to conclude whether an individual is a suitable candidate for this revolutionary procedure. Most patients are suitable, allowing a treatment plan to be mapped out and discussed.

Placement: This phase usually involves the actual placement of the implant(s) during the course of a single visit.

Stabilizing: Most implants will then remain underneath the gums for 3 to 6 months. During this time the biological bonding of the jawbone to the implant occurs.

The Interim: Particularly if you’re receiving multiple implants, you may wonder how you’ll eat and carry out other functions during the interim. Through this healing period, a modified denture, temporary denture or a bridge will often be installed to permit normal activities without restriction (after an initial modified diet of soft foods).
